If you start the animation to put your hand in front of you for the flick, and a projectile is near you, you auto-flick it instantly. If you hold flick, and a projectile hits your flick-ready hand *after* the flick is prepared, it will hit you - so you can either wait for the projectile to be inside you and it will auto-reflect, or you can try to time the flick to actually hit the projectile.

A hit confirm off of Garuda Impact using a drift Blue Roman Cancel. Due to the BRC's longer slow down than the other RC's, you are able to squeze in an extra Hammerfall Break into 2S. The timing for the BRC is a bit later than you think as you need to wait until the Garuda Impact recovery animation completes before inputting the RC in order to get blue (instead of purple). If you end up getting a Red RC, you are inputting it way too early. If you are in the corner instead of midscreen when you land the Garuda Impact, you can get a bit more freeform on your combo route.
